October Is Here: The 2026 MLB Postseason Field Is Set

The Road to October is over. Twelve teams remain, the bracket is set and postseason baseball begins Tuesday.

For weeks, teams were fighting for position, fighting for divisions and, in some cases, simply fighting to get through the door.

Now the moving is done.

The 2026 MLB regular season is over, the postseason field has been cut from 30 teams to 12, and the road to the World Series officially has its starting points.

Some teams get a few extra days to prepare. Eight others don’t have that luxury.

Four Teams Get to Wait

The Tampa Bay Rays enter the American League side of the bracket as the No. 1 seed after winning the AL East. The Cleveland Guardians claimed the AL Central and the No. 2 seed.

Both advance directly to the American League Division Series.

In the National League, the Milwaukee Brewers earned the No. 1 seed after finishing with MLB’s best record, while the Los Angeles Dodgers secured the No. 2 spot. They’ll also bypass the Wild Card round and wait for the field to shrink.

For everybody else, October starts early.

The Wild Card Field

The Wild Card Series begins Tuesday with four best-of-three matchups:

National League
No. 6 Philadelphia Phillies at No. 3 Atlanta Braves
No. 5 Chicago Cubs at No. 4 San Diego Padres

American League
No. 6 Chicago White Sox at No. 3 Houston Astros
No. 5 Boston Red Sox at No. 4 New York Yankees MLB.com

There isn’t much room to recover in a three-game series. Two losses and the season is over.

Philadelphia Gets Through the Door

The Phillies entered the final day of the regular season with one job left: finish it.

They did.

Philadelphia defeated Tampa Bay 7–3 Sunday, clinching the final National League Wild Card and shutting the door on Arizona’s late push. The reward is the No. 6 seed and a trip to Atlanta for a postseason meeting with the NL East champion Braves.

It’s a fitting ending to a postseason race that stayed unsettled until Game 162.

The Phillies weren’t the only team whose October destination came down to the final day.

Houston Takes the West

Houston and Texas entered Sunday tied atop the AL West, but the Astros held the head-to-head tiebreaker.

When Minnesota beat Texas 6–4, the division belonged to Houston.

The Astros take the No. 3 seed and will host the Chicago White Sox in the Wild Card round.

With that, the final unanswered question on the American League side was settled.

Now It Counts Differently

The regular season told us who earned the right to be here.

It doesn’t tell us who survives.

Four teams have byes. Eight begin playing Tuesday. By the end of the Wild Card round, four more seasons will be over and the Division Series field will be complete.

The Phillies and Braves open Tuesday’s schedule at 2 p.m. ET, followed by White Sox–Astros at 5 p.m., Red Sox–Yankees at 8 p.m. and Cubs–Padres at 10 p.m. Games 2 are scheduled for the same times Wednesday, with Game 3s Thursday only where necessary.

A few weeks ago, the question was who would find a place in October.

We have that answer now.

October is here.
